Spine consists of three works: a stone sculpture, a line engraving on an existing stone slab, and a dot engraving on existing natural stone. The works are based on illustrations and diagrams that show a study of a spine. The sculpture that rises on the hill is made of stone layers from different geographic locations, including reused stones from Varberg: Varberg granite (charnockite) and Halland granite, which belonged to the Gerlachska House. The stone surfaces have been treated by grinding, sandblasting, cross-peening, flaming and polishing, contributing to a varied expression in color and materiality.
Spine stems from the site, its topography and a historical reference to the quarry that once existed here. Stone is the oldest material of art, and its durability, strength and unfathomable time horizon provide perspective on time, space and place. The natural stones have likely been on the site for millennia.
